How to Know You Need to Hire an Assistant

In this digital age we live in, time never slows down.  Life is always seems like it wants to rush forward without fully thinking through the implications of possible missteps or failures.  If you want to get a handle of your professional schedule and ideas, as well as show people you are good to your word, it is essential that you either (a) hire an assistant or (b) organize your life in a replicable, sustainable, and systematic manner.  If you even want to consider the possibility of hiring an assistant, here are some things that might happen to you that can indicate you need to hire an assistant.

1 - You are missing appointments, meetings, or get togethers.

When you do not keep an organized calendar, there are numerous ways to end up ruining relationships.  If you tell someone you are going to be somewhere and you either (a) don’t show up or (b) have to cancel the event after committing to it, you are receiving a tell tale sign that you need to change how you get organized.

2 - You lose track of ideas you have for your business.

As an entrepreneur or leader, it is important to keep track of all the ideas you concoct.  If you do not have a solid method for recording ideas, settings reminders that you’ll actually see to follow up on fleshing out the ideas, and bringing the ideas to fruition, then it’s time to make a change.

3 - You forget to follow up on what you say you’ll do.

This is the most blaring sign that you need to get an assistant.  A disorganized, forgetful leader is the sole reason why he/she loses the respect and trust of his/her followers.  If you find you are telling people you will do something and you realize you never followed up, it’s important to recognize that you need help.  Allow this to persuade you to hire an assistant; remember, your reputation is at stake here!

Assistants can help you manage your schedule, contacts, meetings, goals, objectives, and tasks.  They can create daily agendas for you, brief you on topics that need to be discussed in meetings before you have them, and help you focus on what is most necessary--your business and career.  If you reply with, “things will change,” or, “things are just busy right now,” you may be making excuses as to why you are not as organized as you would like.

Remember: Life never slows down.  You have to be intentional about slowing it down, or it will control you and bring you down paths you do not want to go down.

If your disorganization is negatively affecting your professional relationships and people’s view of your character and capabilities, it’s time to look for an assistant as soon as possible.  The worst that can happen in the process of searching for one is that either (a) you realize you don’t need one and you can get organized yourself or (b) you really do need one.  Either way, you will benefit from looking into hiring an assistant.  It is a win-win situation!
